Bladesports
BladeSports International Inc.™ is a Texas nonprofit corporation formed to promote knife safety, provide workshops and cutting events for its members, and to inform and educate the public with regard to the safe use of a knife as a tool.
In a Blade Sports cutting competition, competitors use large, specially designed knives to perform a series of precise cutting tasks on a standardized course. It's a test of skill, strength, accuracy, and control, not just raw power. These events are both athletic and technical, showcasing how well a competitor can manipulate a blade through challenging materials including 2" rope, paper, water bottles, 2x4 wood, rolling tennis ball and free standing straws.
Safety meeting starts at 9am and Event starts at 10am!

Rhymer Knives
Since I was young, I have always loved knives and making things by hand. When I was about 14 I decided to put my talents to the test and save money by making my own since I couldn’t afford the quality I desired. So I took a crack at it with a camp fire and a leaf blower in the Georgia heat. This obviously went horribly, until I discovered a very crude design for a forge that involved a hair dryer of all things. Slowly but surely I was able to get the steel hot enough to work and had gotten a small cast iron anvil from harbor freight, which allowed me to make my first knife out of rebar. That slowly escalated to me making better and better products with more sophisticated equipment. I then started to make knives for my family to pay them back for the financial help they gave me when I was young. I had to take almost two years off when I deployed to Afghanistan in 2019. When I got back from my deployment I decided to use some of the money I made from going over seas into investing back into my knives. Since then this hobby has slowly grown into a small business. Now, my goal is to put my name on the highest quality product I can physically produce and to give my customers a product unlike any other that will last more than a life time.

Rowland Cutlery

I started customizing production kitchen knives around 2005 to make them fit my hand better. I liked to smooth out the spine or choil so they were easier for a long prep day or regrind/thin the blade for better cutting performance. After years of that I started to make traditional style Japanese Wa Handles and after re-handling all of my personal knives my co-workers and chef buddies all wanted me to make them some and it rolled into a small business. While working as the specialty restaurant chef at the Atlanta Renaissance Waverly hotel from 2011 to 2015 I got to attend Blade Show “the worlds largest knife show” and meet tons of amazing custom knifemakers from around the world. During one of the Blade Shows a custom knifemaker saw one of my handles on a carving knife and paid me a compliment on the woodwork. He then handed me a piece of carbon steel and challenged me to make a complete knife for him to see the following year at the show. Well I have never been one to back down from a challenge so shortly after I decided to take up the hobby of custom knife making and have been doing the stock removal method ever since. I was juried into the Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild in 2018.

Walter Sorrells

Walter Sorrells has been forging knives and swords in the Japanese style for over two decades. Walter’s interest in making blades grew out of a long-time interest in martial arts. As a longtime martial artist, with extensive experience in a number of Japanese sword arts, Walter approaches every blade from the standpoint of a practical user. Walter doesn’t claim to make “Japanese swords.” Rather he makes modern swords which are inspired by the Japanese martial arts, and by the Japanese sword-making tradition.

Larrin Thomas

Larrin Thomas, a steel metallurgist in Pittsburgh, PA. I developed an interest in steel by visiting knife shows with my father, Devin Thomas, who makes damascus steel. At those knife shows I heard knife makers claim that their steels and heat treatments were better for various and interesting reasons; I wanted to know who was telling the truth! I began reading everything I could on steel metallurgy and that culminated in a PhD in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. I now work professionally developing steels for the automotive industry, but I still love the high carbon steels used in knives. So to feed that passion, I write about knife steel related topics on my blog here, Knife Steel Nerds, where we can all nerd out on steel together.
