The Kephart knife traces its origins to the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is named after Horace Kephart, an influential American writer and outdoorsman. Kephart was a key figure in the early conservation and outdoor recreation movements, and he emphasized the importance of practical, reliable tools for wilderness living. His ideal knife design was simple, utilitarian, and effective for a wide range of camp and bushcraft tasks. The original Kephart knife, believed to have been crafted by the Colclesser Brothers based on Kephart's specifications, featured a straight spine, drop point blade, and a modest wooden handle—prioritizing function over ornamentation. Over time, this design became a staple in bushcraft communities and is still celebrated today for its timeless practicality and rugged elegance.
